Early Life and Education

Dr. Zakir Husain was born on February 8, 1897, in Hyderabad (now in Telangana). He received his early education in Etawah and later studied at the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh, which became Aligarh Muslim University. He later pursued a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Berlin. His time in Europe shaped his intellectual outlook and appreciation for both Indian and Western ideas.

Role in Education and the Freedom Movement

Upon returning to India, Dr. Husain joined the nationalist movement and worked closely with Mahatma Gandhi. He strongly believed education was vital for national progress. In 1920, he co-founded Jamia Millia Islamia, which stood as a symbol of resistance to British rule and a center for secular, progressive learning. Despite hardships, he spent decades building the institution, often working without pay.

After independence, Dr. Husain served in key national roles. He was Governor of Bihar (1957–1962), then Vice President (1962–1967). Tragically, he died in office on May 3, 1969—the first Indian President to do so.
