Mr. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi
In Office: 1 August 2017 – 31 May 2018
Political Party: Pakistan Muslim League
Home State: Punjab
Lifespan: born 1958

Early Life and Education
Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, a prominent Pakistani politician, technocrat, and businessman, served as the 21st Prime Minister of Pakistan from August 2017 to May 2018. He was born on December 27, 1958, in Murree, Punjab, into a politically influential family. His father, Khaqan Abbasi, served as a federal minister and closely allied himself with General Zia-ul-Haq.
Abbasi completed his early education in Pakistan and later traveled to the United States, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a Master’s degree in Engineering Management from George Washington University.
Business and Early Political Career
Before entering politics, Abbasi led an aviation business. He founded and managed Air Blue, a private airline that emerged as one of Pakistan’s major carriers. His technical and managerial expertise equipped him with a unique skill set for handling large-scale operations, which later benefited him in governmental roles.
Abbasi began his political career in 1988, after his father died in the Ojhri Camp disaster. He contested the general elections from the NA-50 constituency and secured a seat in the National Assembly as a Pakistan Muslim League (PML) candidate. He later joined PML-N under Nawaz Sharif. Since then, voters from Murree/Rawalpindi have repeatedly elected him, allowing him to represent the area multiple times in the National Assembly.
Ministerial Roles
Abbasi held several key cabinet positions under successive PML-N governments. In 2008, he briefly served as Minister for Commerce. From 2013 to 2017, he acted as the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources. In this role, he introduced Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to Pakistan’s energy market to address the country’s energy crisis. He negotiated LNG import deals and oversaw the establishment of import terminals. His work in the energy sector drew both praise and criticism, but it significantly shaped Pakistan’s energy policy.
Prime Ministership (2017–2018)
After the Supreme Court disqualified Nawaz Sharif in July 2017 due to the Panama Papers case, the PML-N leadership nominated Abbasi as the consensus candidate for Prime Minister. On August 1, 2017, the National Assembly elected him as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
During his tenure, Abbasi focused on ensuring continuity in governance, completing ongoing infrastructure and energy projects, and maintaining political stability. He pushed for tax reforms, expanded energy initiatives, and reinforced democratic institutions. He adopted a pragmatic, technocratic leadership style, placing emphasis on performance over politics.
Post-Premiership and Current Role
After his term ended in 2018, Abbasi remained active in national politics. He contested the 2018 general elections, won a seat in the National Assembly, and continued to play a key role within the PML-N. He regularly contributes to policy debates and party strategy sessions. In recent years, he also advocated for dialogue on national unity and called for governance reforms.
Legacy
Pakistanis widely regard Abbasi as a technocrat with strong administrative skills and a clean political record. Although his time as Prime Minister was brief, he ensured a smooth transition of power and left a mark on Pakistan’s energy development and democratic progress. His leadership, grounded in competence and continuity, earned him respect across party lines.
