Early Life and Education

Pratibha Devisingh Patil was born on December 19, 1934, in Nadgaon village, Jalgaon district, Maharashtra. She studied at RR Vidyalaya in Jalgaon and later earned a Master’s degree in Political Science and Economics from Mooljee Jetha College. She also obtained an LL.B. from Government Law College, Mumbai. A skilled table tennis player, she won several inter-collegiate championships during her college years.

Political Career

Patil entered politics in 1962 when she was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly at age 27. She held various ministerial roles, including Public Health, Social Welfare, and Housing. She also served as Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly and President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee.

In 1985, she moved to national politics as a Rajya Sabha member and became Deputy Chairperson. In 2004, she was appointed as the first woman Governor of Rajasthan.

Presidency (2007–2012)

On July 25, 2007, Patil became India’s 12th and first woman President, supported by the UPA and allies. As President, she focused on women’s empowerment, education, and rural development. She promoted the socio-economic upliftment of women, which led to the creation of a national mission.

She also launched the “ROSHINI” project to make the President’s Estate eco-friendly, emphasizing sustainability in waste, water, and energy use.

Legacy and Controversies

Though her presidency saw positive initiatives, it also faced criticism. She was accused of misusing government funds for foreign trips and acquiring land in Pune for retirement. Her decision to commute the death sentences of 19 convicts also sparked debate.

Despite controversies, her rise from a village in Maharashtra to the presidency showed her perseverance. Her journey inspired many, proving the strength of India’s democracy. Pratibha Patil’s presidency marked a milestone for women in Indian politics and encouraged inclusive leadership for national progress.
