Laurynas Mindaugas Stankevičius was born on 10 August 1935 in Aukštadvaris, Lithuania. He completed his secondary education at Antanas Vienuolis Secondary School in Vilnius in 1953. After finishing school, he studied economics at the Leningrad Institute of Finance and Economics from 1953 to 1957.
