Sultan bin Abdulaziz: Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Crown Prince
Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was one of the most prominent members of the Saudi royal family and a key figure in the governance of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for nearly five decades. Born in 1931 in Riyadh as a son of King Abdulaziz Al Saud—the founder of modern Saudi Arabia—Prince Sultan’s contributions to the state spanned crucial political, military, and diplomatic roles that helped shape the trajectory of the Kingdom during the latter half of the 20th century and the early 21st century.
Early Life and Rise in Public Service
Prince Sultan grew up during a transformative period in Saudi history, witnessing the consolidation of his father’s rule and the development of the modern Saudi state. From a young age, he was groomed for public service, receiving religious and administrative training that reflected the traditional approach to preparing members of the House of Saud for leadership. His upbringing combined deep familiarity with Islamic principles and close exposure to the workings of Saudi governance.
His early career started with regional administrative duties, including service in provincial roles that introduced him to governance and statecraft. As the Kingdom expanded its institutional foundations, Sultan’s leadership qualities drew attention, and he began to occupy more significant posts within the Saudi government.
Minister of Defense and Aviation
Prince Sultan assumed one of his most enduring posts as Minister of Defense and Aviation in 1962, a role he held for nearly five decades until his death in 2011. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing the modernization and strategic development of Saudi Arabia’s armed forces. Under his stewardship, the Saudi military expanded its capabilities, infrastructure, and defense partnerships with key allies.
This period was marked by rapid development in regional security dynamics, including the aftermath of the Arab‑Israeli wars, the Iran‑Iraq War, and the Gulf War. Sultan’s long tenure provided stability and continuity in defense leadership at a time when regional security concerns were paramount. His position also made him one of the most influential figures within the Saudi Council of Ministers, where defense and national security were perennial priorities.ا
Second Deputy Prime Minister and Crown Prince
In 1982, Prince Sultan was appointed Second Deputy Prime Minister, further elevating his status within the Saudi leadership hierarchy. This position acknowledged his prominence not only in military affairs but also in national policy and governance. Over the following decades, he served as a senior adviser and mediator within the royal court, often representing the Kingdom in official delegations abroad.
In 2005, following the death of King Fahd, Sultan was elevated to Crown Prince and First Deputy Prime Minister under King Abdullah. As Crown Prince, he was second in line to the Saudi throne and played an important role in internal affairs, including representing the Kingdom at high‑level international forums and summit meetings. His appointment underscored the trust placed in him as a consensus figure among senior royals and statesmen.
Diplomacy and International Representation
Throughout his career, Prince Sultan represented Saudi Arabia on numerous diplomatic missions and international gatherings. He led significant Saudi delegations to the United Nations General Assembly, Arab League meetings, and other global forums, where he articulated the Kingdom’s positions on development, peace, and Islamic solidarity. His diplomatic engagements enhanced Saudi Arabia’s global profile during periods of political and economic transformation.
Humanitarian Work and Legacy
Beyond his political and military roles, Sultan bin Abdulaziz was known for his support of humanitarian and charitable initiatives. He chaired or contributed to various philanthropic efforts that aimed to improve social welfare within Saudi Arabia and across the Muslim world. His engagement in charitable causes reflected a broader tradition within the House of Saud of patronage toward cultural, educational, and humanitarian causes.
