Early Life and Royal Background
Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah was born on 13 May 1898 into the Selangor royal family. He was the son of Sultan Alauddin Sulaiman Shah, the fifth Sultan of Selangor. From an early age, he received education and training suitable for a royal heir, focusing on governance, administration, and Malay customs. These early experiences helped shape his disciplined personality and prepared him for future leadership responsibilities.
Reign as Sultan of Selangor
Sultan Hisamuddin ascended the throne of Selangor in 1938. His early reign coincided with a difficult period marked by the Second World War and the Japanese occupation of Malaya. During this challenging time, he was temporarily removed from power by the Japanese authorities. After the war ended, he was restored as Sultan in 1945, an event that strengthened his reputation as a legitimate and respected ruler among his people.
As Sultan of Selangor, he emphasized justice, religious values, and the welfare of his subjects. He supported Islamic institutions and upheld Malay traditions while adapting to the changing political environment of post-war Malaya.
Role as Yang di-Pertuan Agong
In 1960, Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah was elected as the second Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, the country’s constitutional monarch. His appointment came at a time when Malaysia was still building its national identity after independence. As king, he respected the constitutional framework and worked closely with elected leaders, demonstrating the balance between monarchy and democracy.
Although his reign as Yang di-Pertuan Agong was brief, he fulfilled his duties with dignity and restraint. He focused on unity, national stability, and respect for the rule of law.
Personal Qualities and Leadership Style
Sultan Hisamuddin was widely admired for his humility, honesty, and simplicity. He preferred a modest lifestyle and avoided displays of excessive luxury. His leadership style reflected calm authority rather than force, earning him respect from both the public and political leaders.

Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah passed away on 1 September 1960, shortly after becoming Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Despite his short tenure as king, his legacy remains significant.
