In 2012, the Supreme Court of Pakistan convicted Yusuf Raza Gilani of contempt of court for refusing to reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari. As a result, the court disqualified him from office on June 19, 2012.While Gilani complied with the court’s ruling, the decision sparked widespread debate about the separation of powers and judicial activism in Pakistan’s political landscape.
Political Comeback and Senate Leadership
After his disqualification, Gilani remained active in politics. In March 2021, he made a strong political comeback by defeating the ruling party’s candidate in the Senate elections from Islamabad.
