Presidents of Slovakia

The President of Slovakia is the head of state of the Slovak Republic. Since gaining independence from Czechoslovakia on 1 January 1993, Slovakia has had six presidents. The president represents the country internationally, appoints the prime minister, signs laws, and serves as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. Although the role is largely ceremonial, the president plays an important part in maintaining constitutional stability and national unity.

First President: Michal Kováč

Michal Kováč became the first president of independent Slovakia in 1993. He was elected by the Slovak Parliament and served until 1998. During his presidency, Slovakia was still establishing its democratic institutions after the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia. Kováč worked to strengthen democratic values and the country’s international reputation.

Second President: Rudolf Schuster

After a brief period without a president, Rudolf Schuster was elected in Slovakia’s first direct presidential election in 1999. His presidency focused on promoting Slovakia’s integration into European and international organizations. Under his leadership, the country moved closer to membership in major Western institutions.

Third President: Ivan Gašparovič

Ivan Gašparovič served two consecutive terms, making him one of Slovakia’s longest-serving presidents. During his ten years in office, Slovakia joined the eurozone and strengthened its position within the European Union. His presidency was marked by political stability and continued economic development.

Fourth President: Andrej Kiska

Andrej Kiska entered politics from the business and charitable sectors. As president, he emphasized transparency, anti-corruption measures, and civic responsibility. Kiska became popular for his independent approach and support for democratic reforms.

Fifth President: Zuzana Čaputová

Zuzana Čaputová made history as Slovakia’s first female president and the youngest person elected to the office. A lawyer and environmental activist, she gained recognition for her fight against environmental pollution. Her presidency focused on the rule of law, human rights, and strengthening public trust in democratic institutions.

Current President: Peter Pellegrini

Peter Pellegrini became the sixth president of Slovakia in June 2024. Before assuming the presidency, he served as prime minister and held several important government positions. As president, he represents Slovakia at home and abroad while working within the country’s constitutional framework.
