Early Life and Background
Basappa Danappa Jatti, popularly known as B. D. Jatti, was born on September 10, 1912, in Savalgi, a village in the Bijapur district of present-day Karnataka, India. Coming from a humble background, he pursued law and entered public life through social work and local politics. His simplicity, integrity, and commitment to public service defined his political journey.
Political Career
B. D. Jatti began his political career as a member of the Bombay Legislative Assembly and later served as the Chief Minister of Mysore State (now Karnataka) from 1958 to 1962. He was known for his administrative skills and people-centric governance. After serving in various ministerial roles, he became the Lieutenant Governor of Pondicherry and then the Governor of Odisha from 1972 to 1974.
In 1974, Jatti was elected as the Vice President of India, a role he fulfilled with dignity and neutrality. His calm and balanced nature earned him respect across political parties.
Acting President of India
After the death of President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed on February 11, 1977, B. D. Jatti, then the Vice President, automatically assumed the role of Acting President of India under Article 65 of the Constitution. He served in this capacity from February 11 to July 25, 1977, until Neelam Sanjiva Reddy took office as the next elected President.
His tenure as Acting President came during a sensitive political period — the aftermath of the Emergency (1975–77) and the Janata Party’s rise to power. Jatti managed the office with neutrality, ensuring the smooth functioning of constitutional processes during a time of political transition.
Legacy and Later Life
After completing his term as Vice President in 1979, B. D. Jatti retired from active politics but remained a respected elder statesman. Known for his humility and integrity, he was often referred to as a “people’s leader” who never lost touch with his roots.
He passed away on June 7, 2002, leaving behind a legacy of simplicity, service, and strong constitutional values. His life serves as a reminder that leadership with integrity and humility can earn deep and lasting respect.
