Early Life and Education

Bidya Devi Bhandari was born on June 19, 1961, in Mane Bhannjyang, Bhojpur District, Nepal. She grew up in a politically aware environment that shaped her future leadership. She completed her schooling in Bhojpur and later pursued higher education at Tribhuvan University, where she became actively involved in student politics.

Political Journey

Bhandari began her political career in the late 1970s by joining the All Nepal National Free Students Union. She actively participated in movements for democracy, advocating for social change and women’s rights. She became a member of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) and gained recognition for her leadership and dedication to public service.

In 1993, she entered the national political arena by winning a seat in the House of Representatives. She later served as Minister of Environment and Population in 1997 and Minister of Defence from 2009 to 2011. Her leadership in the defence sector marked her as a strong political figure in Nepal.

Presidency and Achievements

On October 28, 2015, Nepal’s parliament elected Bhandari as the country’s first female president, a historic milestone in Nepal’s political landscape. She won re-election in March 2018, serving two consecutive terms until 2023.

As president, Bhandari actively promoted gender equality and women’s empowerment. She encouraged female participation in governance and policy-making, supported constitutional provisions for women’s rights, and advocated for environmental sustainability. She also worked to maintain political stability during Nepal’s transition to a federal democratic republic.

Bhandari played a crucial role in implementing the 2015 constitution and strengthening Nepal’s democratic institutions. She often engaged in diplomatic relations, representing Nepal in various international forums and fostering ties with other nations.
