Early Career and Advocacy
Robredo began her professional journey as an economist and later worked as a lawyer for the poor. She joined the Sentro ng Alternatibong Lingap Panligal (SALIGAN), a public interest law group that provided legal assistance to underprivileged communities. Through this work, she empowered rural women, farmers, and fisherfolk to fight for their rights. Her compassion for the underrepresented shaped her future in politics and public service.
Entry into Politics
Leni Robredo entered politics after the tragic death of her husband, Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, in a plane crash in 2012. Many urged her to continue his legacy of honest governance. In 2013, she ran for Congress in Camarines Sur’s Third District and won by a large margin. As a legislator, she authored and supported bills promoting transparency, anti-poverty programs, and rural development. Her integrity and dedication earned her national recognition.
Becoming Vice President of the Philippines
In 2016, Leni Robredo ran for vice president under the Liberal Party. She campaigned on a platform of honesty, empowerment, and social justice. Despite facing strong opponents, she won the election by a narrow margin, becoming the 14th Vice President of the Philippines and the second woman to hold the position.
Leadership and Programs as Vice President
As Vice President, Robredo focused on programs that uplifted the poor and improved local governance. Through her office’s flagship initiative, Angat Buhay, she connected private institutions with communities in need. Her projects provided housing, education, health care, and livelihood opportunities for thousands of Filipinos.
She often visited remote areas, listening directly to citizens’ concerns. Her hands-on leadership inspired volunteers and civil society groups to participate in nation-building. Even with limited resources, she maximized partnerships to deliver meaningful results.
Advocacy for Good Governance
Robredo consistently promoted transparency and accountability in government. She spoke openly against corruption and championed ethical leadership. Her calm yet firm stance on social and political issues earned respect from supporters across political divides. She also advocated for gender equality, believing that women should play active roles in decision-making and leadership.
Responding to Challenges
Throughout her term, Robredo faced political challenges, including limited coordination with the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte. Despite these obstacles, she continued to work independently and deliver effective programs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she mobilized volunteers to distribute personal protective equipment, food packs, and support for frontliners. Her office also launched livelihood assistance and online learning initiatives for affected families.
