Founding Era: Ho Chi Minh & Early Years

Hồ Chí Minh was the first President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, serving from 1946 until his death in 1969. After his passing, Tôn Đức Thắng became the next leader. He served as President of North Vietnam and, after reunification in 1976, the State President of all Vietnam until his death in 1980.

Communist Consolidation (1980s–1990s)

Presidents of Vietnam During the early 1980s, Vietnam’s head of state position shifted to a “Chairman of the Council of State” under its then-constitution. Trường Chinh (1981–1987) and Võ Chí Công (1987–1992) held key roles during this time.
In 1992, the formal “State President” role was reestablished. Lê Đức Anh, a former general, served from 1992 to 1997.
He was succeeded by Trần Đức Lương, who was in office until 2006.
Nguyễn Minh Triết was elected in 2006 and served until 2011.

Trương Tấn Sang followed, serving from 2011 to 2016.
Trần Đại Quang, a former police general and Minister of Public Security, was President from 2016 until his death in 2018.

After Quang’s death, Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh acted as President briefly.
hú Trọng, who was already General Secretary of the Communist Party, took on the presidency (2018–2021), becoming one of the few Vietnamese leaders to hold both top party and state roles. Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, previously Prime Minister, became President in April 2021.

Recent Turmoil

In March 2023, Võ Văn Thưởng, one of the youngest Presidents in Vietnam’s history, was elect However, he resigned in March 2024 amid an anti-corruption campaign.
In October 2024, General Lương Cường was elected as the new President by the National Assembly, pledging unity, rule-of-law, and national defense in his inaugural speech.

Presidents of Vietnam Over time, the presidency has reflected both continuity and transition in Vietnam’s one-party system.Some presidents, like Hồ Chí Minh and Nguyễn Phú Trọng, are historically very powerful figures, but most are more symbolic, focusing on diplomacy or national unity.
