Ayaz Mutallibov (1991–1992)

The first president of independent Azerbaijan was Ayaz Mutallibov. Previously, he served as the leader of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. Mutallibov’s presidency was marked by political instability and the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with Armenia. Widespread protests and dissatisfaction with his handling of the conflict forced him to resign in March 1992, paving the way for a new political leadership.

Abulfaz Elchibey (1992–1993)

Ilham Aliyev (2003–Present)

After Heydar Aliyev’s death, his son Ilham Aliyev took over as the fourth president. Ilham Aliyev has been re-elected multiple times and continues to oversee Azerbaijan’s economic growth, modernization efforts, and military capabilities. His presidency has also been marked by the resolution of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which restored parts of Azerbaijan’s territorial control. Ilham Aliyev maintains a strong international presence and represents Azerbaijan in global diplomatic forums.
