Presidents of Laos

The President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos) is the head of state and a central figure in the country’s political system. Laos follows a single-party socialist framework led by the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP). Souphanouvong (1975–1991)

Prince Souphanouvong became the first President of Laos after the abolition of the monarchy in 1975 and the proclamation of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Known as the “Red Prince,” he was a prominent revolutionary leader and a founding figure of the new socialist state. His presidency focused on consolidating power, building state institutions, and aligning Laos closely with other socialist countries in the region.

Phoumi Vongvichit (Acting, 1991–1992)

After Souphanouvong stepped down due to health reasons, Phoumi Vongvichit served briefly as Acting President. His tenure was transitional, ensuring continuity while the party prepared for a formal leadership change.

Nouhak Phoumsavanh (1992–1998)

Nouhak Phoumsavanh became president in 1992 and guided Laos during a period of cautious reform and post–Cold War adjustment. Under his leadership, Laos strengthened diplomatic relations with neighboring countries and international organizations while maintaining its socialist political structure.

Khamtay Siphandone (1998–2006)

Khamtay Siphandone served as president from 1998 to 2006. A veteran party leader, he emphasized political stability and economic development. His presidency coincided with efforts to modernize infrastructure and gradually open the economy, while keeping the LPRP firmly in control.

Choummaly Sayasone (2006–2016)

Choummaly Sayasone held office for a decade, focusing on regional integration and development. During his tenure, Laos increased cooperation within ASEAN and promoted large-scale projects in hydropower and transport. Poverty reduction and economic growth were key themes of his presidency.

Bounnhang Vorachith (2016–2021)

Bounnhang Vorachith became president in 2016. His leadership continued the emphasis on economic stability, anti-corruption efforts, and social development. Laos also marked important national milestones during this period, including anniversaries of independence and the republic.

Thongloun Sisoulith (2021–Present)

The current president, Thongloun Sisoulith, assumed office in 2021. Previously serving as prime minister, he brought experience in governance and diplomacy. His presidency focuses on economic recovery, regional cooperation, and maintaining political stability while addressing development challenges.
